I have been at Stony Brook University Hospital since 1989 in the clinical laboratory. I was the day shift supervisor in Hematology from 1994 - 2021. During that time I I have been involved in UUP in many different ways. I started out as a department representative because I believed in unions and I felt I had skills to offer. I continued in that role for a few years and then decided (or was prompted) to run as a delegate. Once I was an elected delegate and upon interaction with the newly elected chapter president, I took on a larger role. 2 important professional committees are specified in our contract; one was not active: the college review panel. I got that up and running and chaired that committee and the committee for professional evaluation review. I also created the chapter website and acted as webmaster for several years. I was elected as Vice President for Professionals in 2017 As VPP I worked closely with the chapter president to advocate for market analyses and, during COVID, to ensure a safe working environment. I was appointed as president in 2021. I was re-elected in 2023 and 2025. As chapter president I was able to negotiate an agreement for the per diem employees who were being abused and scheduled as full-time or part-time, enabling them to be credited with past accruals and also given the option to convert to either part-time or full-time based on their work history. I advocated for equity in a number of departments. Recently, I have been engaged in parking negotiations to push back on excessive increases in the member parking rates.
